Do Politicians Lie Intentionally?

Do you think that politicians lie? What types of lies are acceptable? What types of lies are not acceptable? Is it democratic to allow a politician to lie themselves into a political position?

Hey Mrs. Zerwas,
Yes, think that politicans lie, but i dont think its okay....lying about something that might help you win the presidency. Nobody wants to have a liar as the President of the United States. What has this world come to when a president , the one that is suppose to give us hope and guidance is lying to us???? i dont really think that any type of lie should be acceptable, but if i had to choose i would rather have a politican lie about something small that doesnt relate to politics like what year he was born because nobody really cares how old a politican is. i guess it is democratic for a politican to lie about something small in his political positiion but when it comes to something like "i did not have sexual relations with that women" infront of the public and under oath i dont think that is okay or should be tolerated.

i think every polotician lies to get the upper hand..no lies are exceptable but just because a polotician might say something and never do it doesnt make it a lie maybe they couldnt get funding or the congress didnt pass it and if a polotician doesnt want the public to know about his personal life then i think its ok to lie or stretch the truth.. but lies that are told with no intention of even trying to make it work are unaceptable also lies that bring down the competition are unacceptable and democracy allowes this because its freedom of speech

Ok I think that all politicans lie to a level. Personaly I think they lie most of the time during their campaign if not all the time. Once they get into office then they stop it a little.

Politicans do lie duh, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman"(clinton). Politicans lie and its wrong. No politican should lie to make themselves look good or for any reason for that matter. First, lying to the public is bad and just shows the public that the polition is unqualified for the position their in/running for. If they need to lie they obviously cant do there job right. Second, their lie usually back fires and ends up making them look like an idiot. Politions shouldn't lie about anything small or large because it inevitably effects everyone they are representing. If we have a polition that lies how are we supose to pick out whats lies and whats not? We cant. So by bending the truth they are pretty much giving the finger to society and doing whats best for them and not for the whole which is wrong. We need politions that give it to us straight so we can act instead of beating around the bush with lies cause they screwed up.

Politicians do lie all of the time. It is never okay for them to lie to the American people because americans elect candidates to take care of them and if the candidate lied about what they would do the citizens will be dissapointed. I think it's undemocratic to allow politicians to lie to citizens because the point of democracy is to let everyone have a say and if everyones opinions are based on a lie then really one person has control over everyone.

I feel like majority of the politicians lie to an extent. but mostly i feel like they tend to exaggerate things or over dramatize certain things, especially when it comes to talking about their opponent. They'll pick out one small thing and turn it into a really big thing. I don't feel like its ok for them to do. Because of the fact that these are the people that we expect to give us the straight forward facts and truths about whats happening in our country, and if they can't even tell us the straight forward truth to try and get us to vote for them, what are we supposed to expect?

I don't think all of them do, but most politicians definitely lie. Of course they will do whatever it takes to get into office. I don't think any lies are acceptable because then how are we supposed to trust what any candidate says, if we know there is a good chance that it might not be the truth? If they are going to lie about something, obviously it would be better if it wasn't about something that affects our country; but in the end, it would only hurt them when the public finds out that they don't tell the truth. It is democratic b/c its freedom of speech, but I don't think that makes it right.

I do believe that every politician lies during some type of speech that they give. None of the lies that a politician uses are acceptable. They have no reason to lie, besides the fact that fact that they are either trying to make themselves look better or trying to make their opponent look stupid. Every type of lie is not acceptable. It is democratic to allow a politician to lie themselves into a position because everyone is allowed freedom of speech. Although it isn't right people still lie all the time. So how can anyone say that it is not right for a politician to lie, when everyone else around them lies everyday?

everyone lies. we all know it. but do we really know when a politician is actually lying? in a way we do know that every politician has lied. about what, we dont know. even if we have a law to not lie, it is going to happen. we cant enforce it. but what if the lie is for our own safety? what if that lie holds the country back from a civil war? i believe that in that case, a lie is acceptable. it could help maintain a "stable" government, but at the same time making it a corrupt one. then again, who knows when the right time to lie is? so when you ask me if i believe lying is okay, i cant give you an honest answer. i really dont know. it depends on what the lie is about.

Of course all politicians lie and it is unacceptable that they do so, but it is democratic to allow them to do it. In a democracy it is up to the people to select their leaders, if we elect someone that is a liar and we don't get rid of them, then it is ultimately out fault. Everything has a downside, one of the downsides of a democratic society is that we have to pay attention and find out when a politician lies, and we have to do something about it.

Yes I do believe politicians lie. I don't think it's acceptable. I think the presidents have a false image thinking its necessary/helpful to lie but i dont think its good. How can you or anyone else trust a liar? In the big picture lying is going to happen with politicians and debates and what not, and it works sometimes. But most of the time media uses against them and people joke about it. So I think its a disadvantage for them to lie.

i think that its fine if a politican lies firstly because its freesom of speech, we have the write to say what ever we want so they should too. second, if they lie and get caught which they most likley will then thats there problem. they dug that hole for themselves and probably lost a bunch of respect and support.

Absolutely politicians lie they practically have to if they want to please both sides of the political spectrum but that doesn't necessarily make it right. But in the same sense they have to still try to maintain some illusion of innocence and honesty if they want to become in any seat of power. Lying to the people (us) is okay as long as we don't know about it. If Bush told us everything we knew we would hate him more than we already do. Now if a person lies and is caught.....well then there is a problem cause he didn't hold up his half of the bargain and now we are mad and have the power to kick him out. For example Gray Davis the last Governor of California before Arnold. A man that told California to our face that everything is cool when in fact we sinking in debt. He lied we caught him hes out. Its just that simple.

Of course politicians lie, just look at how much Obama and McCain have flip floped on they're ideas and opinions. Even though everyone lies I don't think its right to lie when your a politician because they're lies can effect a whole nation. But theres not much we can do about it because democracy does allow freedom of speech.

Honestly, I don't think that politicians lie any more than anyone else in the world does. They DO NOT lie about most of the political topics that they are acused for either. Because they are such a huge political icon, why would they lie about something that millions of people were trying to prove them wrong about. Especially when it is so close to the most important election in United States history, the presidential candidates are not going to lie about anything the majority of America wants to hear about. If Obama or McCain were to lie about what they had for dinner, NOBODY would care! Politicians don't want their personal lives to get mixed into their political lives. Take the Clinton-Lewinski scandal for example. Clinton didn't want his personal life dragged into his professional life. I'm not saying what he did was right, but I am saying that politicians have so much more focus on what they say than normal people would ever have. Lying is definately a democratc value because it falls under the category of free speech. However moral values and democratic values are often confused. People too often think that democratic values have to be "good" things that we support, but really democratic values are what our country is based off of.

I think that politicians lie all the time. And I don’t think that any lie is acceptable especially by people who are running for president. We Americans elect a leader that we can trust to do a good job and serve the public well. And if he was lying to us the public will have a huge let down when he fails to keep the promises that he made during his campaign.

Yes, i think lying is a popular mechanism politians use to prove more apealing. The race to win over as many votes as possible is almost the encouragement of dishonestly. but with this present how are we to make a logical decision as to who we believe is fit to run this nation? It apears unprofessional and should not be excercised from experienced politicians.

"Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction" There is no question as to weather or not politicians lie. It's just a matter of how much and how often. Of course we know some instances where we have not been told the truth, but it makes you wonder. How much slips past us? It's funny, even our presidential candidates have started lying in the debates. Of course they and other politicians simply plead ignorance when called on their lies, if they respond at all. I think a more common occurrence is politicians stretching the truth. Holding some slice of truth to fall back on if needed while they slip their agenda right on by. I don't think lying is acceptable nor should it be tolerated, unfortunately it is. Lying is not democratic when you misrepresent yourself in order to manipulate the public and get into office. Some have said politicians have the right to lie under their freedom of speech. They don't. Purgery is an impeachable offense, but I don't think we'll see anything come of it unfortunately.

P.S. keep electing Doolittle(he's honest)

yes, politicians lie but they do it to get ahead, which isnt ok but they'll do anything to get elected in the end. not everyone does but when they do we have to be able to realize whats a big deal and whats not. but once they are elected or are chosen i think they start being themselves.

It is obvious that politicians lie, it happens all the time, everywhere. I think that sometimes they have lies that are neccessary but those type of lies are very rare. An example of lies that should not be involved with politics is all the scandals those people have. They are just so SCANDOLOUS, it's like if you want to help run the country you should have all your own stuff in order first. So I believe that politicians should be allowed to lie and stuff but it should be regulated and if it gets out of hand they should be popped.

I think that politicaians shouldn't lie, noone should lie, although I do think that politicians should be able to lie. We live in a democracy so they should be able to say whatever they want. It is a citizen's duty to find out if they are lieing or not and hold them accountable.

I definitely think that politicians lie!....they do it to gain points for themselves. they dont necessarily think about the consequences... they just do it cause at that time it may seem like their only option. But that does not justify them lying to the people...the truth hurts and they should accept it...no one would like to be led by a person who lies just to get them out of a situation...under no circumstance should one in office be allowed to lie to the people because they deserve to know the truth!

kThrough history there have been a number of politicians that lie. In fact most all of them actually. Presidential candidates try to stick to their beliefs but have to tell some lies to receive votes from the other party. I dont believe that it is right for politician to lie. It isn't fair when they distort the truth. Even though politicians lie I believe that it is our job to do some research and find out who is more trustworthy. Politician frequently twist the truth and it should not be tolerated any longer.

Politicians don't necessarily lie, they just say stuff that they probabley won't do. (I guess thats lieing huh?) Anyway I think that it isnt democratic to lie about something that wont happen, but then again how would the voter know? About lies being acceptable, I think that it really depends on the lie, for example I think a lie is unacceptable when they say that they will do something really drastic about a major situation like the finantal crisis. Personally I dont think any type of lie is acceptable.

Yes, I believe politicians do lie to help themselves. I also think they should be aloud to because it is their right to freedom of speech to say whatever they want. It is the decision of the people to decide whether what they say is true or not.

I think lying is something that everyone does, even if its unintentional...so with politicans its no different. They lie! The only way for them to convince us to vote for them is if they talk themselves up. Or they will lie about there competitors to try and make them look bad. But in reality it just makes them look even worse! Just like how McCain tried to tell the viewers in the Presidential Debate that Obama wanted to attack pakistan when really Obama said he wanted to work with Pakistan and try and get Bin Laden! I thought it made McCain look like an idiot and he definitely lost that debate hands down! How can you vote a lyer as president? if he's guna lie right out on t.v what do you think he'll do behind closed doors? Do we want that type of person running our country? i dont think so!

I believe every politician lies regardless of whats going on around them. I think that it's impossible to find an honest candidate otherwise they most likely wouldn't be elected. We choose ppl according to their speeches and reactions to any public affairs around and sometimes they act on their desire to win or they put on a show making us believe they are being honest and looking out for the more important issues, but how do we really know who is truthful and who is dishonest? We DON'T there's no real way to vote on honesty... it's more on how much we feel we can trust the politician. No matter what changes are made anyone can lie and anyone can act, and true politicians have become the best actors around!

I definitely don't think politicians should be able to lie. When they lie, then they are making us believe that they are someone or are goin to do something when it is absolutely false. This is a horrible way to win the trust of the people who are vouching for you. Lying is wrong no matter what and by allowing politicians to do it then we are sayin that it is ok.

Yes, I absolutely believe that politicians lie. During campaigns or in the heat of the moment such as during a debate, they might "stretch the truth", but in certain circumstances they lie. The truth is told more often then lies because they are at a political high and people hear their voice. Yes politicians most definately do lie.

i know this is a little off topic, but i did my presentation on the wikipedia fact checker thing, and why cant they develop one of those to listen to the candidates to check what they say. i do believe that they lie alot more than anyone can realize. i think if they are smart they will try to catch each other in the lies. plan ahead and find rebuttles and evidence to a lie that their opponent is likely to use. they cannot just go back in forth if they want to be convincing.

The U.S. has had 44 presidents, and only one has been nick-named honest. The higher the position a politician holds the more secrecy is involved. If we consider with holding information a lie, then no I don't believe it is wrong. I'm sure there are many things the public doesn't know about our politicians and how our goverment is run. Some maybe we should know, but others we probably shouldn't. We elected our officials for a reason and I believe we should let them do their job. However, intentionally misleading people I don't believe should be condoned. I understand the public eye cannot not be upon every happening in our goverment, but our questions should always be answered honestly.
